Alfalfa Benefits And How To Give To Kids

Published by Bonnie on

Alfalfa is more than just a food for cattle.  Indeed, the health benefits of alfalfa have been used around the world for almost 1500 years.  It has long been used as an herbal remedy for numerous ailments and illnesses.

We personally use an organic alfalfa formulation that has been around for over 50 years.  It is made with a little bit of spearmint, which gives it a yummy taste when crushed or made into a tea. [view Alfalfa product page]

I suppose you could go out and buy alfalfa sprouts, but you would not get nearly the benefit or quick results as you do from taking it in a concentrated supplement form.  The concentrated tablets we use are made from the chlorophyl-rich leaves.

Two Main Alfalfa Benefits With Kids

Since our kids were born, we have used alfalfa most often as an aid for congestion and stuffy noses.  I can give it to my stuffy-nosed child at dinnertime and know that they will sleep better that night.  That’s how fast it works when you give the right amount.

Also, when our kids have an injury or bite that involves swelling of any kind, I grab large doses of alfalfa and vitamin-C.  These two nutrients work together as a powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-histamine.  No more Benadryl® needed in our home!

Other Alfalfa Benefits Include:

  • strengthening kidney function
  • cleansing the blood/aid in detox
  • regulating glandular function
  • replacing lost minerals/aiding mineral balance
  • reducing water retention
  • helping skin to heal
  • relieving sinus pressure
  • reducing effects of allergies and asthma

How To Give Alfalfa Tabs to Kids

Giving alfalfa to kidsPrior to swallowing the tablets whole, our kids would take them crushed and mixed in applesauce or yogurt.  We simply use a mortar and pestle to do the trick.  Other families I know use a coffee grinder to do the same thing.  I’m a big believer in teaching my kids about nutrition and how to take what their bodies’ need, so I like that they can do the vitamin crushing themselves.

The alfalfa we use is also safe enough (free from contaminants) to give to little babies.  Most over-the-counter cold remedies are not even available to really young ones, so alfalfa makes a powerful addition to a home medicine cabinet. A great, safe way to bring relief to little noses!

Alfalfa Can Be a Power Player In Your Child’s Nutrition Progam!

Alfalfa can be a wonderful foundational piece to your child’s nutritional healing program. For best results, use Alfalfa along with a safe, non-gmo protein supplement and proven-effective multivitamin. Not all vitamins are created equal, so be sure to choose one that is backed by clinical research and made from only the purest, natural ingredients.

Learn how Alfalfa can be a powerful player as part of a nutrition program!

I didn’t realise it worked as an anti-inflammatory – that would be really useful in our house for insect bites in the summer as my son is allergic to the usual anti-bite treatments.
Thanks for the info Bonnie.

You are welcome, Lorraine. Glad to give you a safer alternative!

        Bonnie | ProvenNutritionForKids · February 3, 2016 at 8:46 am

The alfalfa tablets that we use are wonderful for children! For a 4-year old, I would give 4 tablets in the morning and 4 more in the afternoon. These can be easily crushed and added to yogurt or mixed with warm water for a tea (along with some lemon and honey for taste). You can find the link here for U.S. orders or we can ship internationally as well if you contact us directly.

          Hi Bonnie,
My son is 8 years old he is a cancer survival. Can I give him any shaklee supplement to him? Is it safe for him? He currently taking medications everyday. I need your advice please. Thank you.

Diane Grant · March 26, 2013 at 4:43 pm

Honestly, alfalfa never even hit my idea of an effective supplement. Alfalfa was something that created a bunch of work in my childhood! Thank you for the timely information as I constantly fight sinus pressure due to living on the Oregon coast and being allergic to mold spores of all things! I will be back to order some from you!

Bonnie (site owner) · March 26, 2013 at 8:35 pm

Diane, hey, I’m glad you found this info then! Alfalfa is awesome in so many ways, and I’m surprised more folks don’t know about it and how it can benefit them. It’s even safe and effective enough for our dog who takes it everyday too! Bye, bye doggy breath! 🙂

Hi dear
May i know the dosage of the alfalfa tablets for kids?
Any guidelines

Thanks

Bonnie (site owner) · March 26, 2013 at 8:29 pm

Thanks for your question! Honestly it really depends upon the purity, potency, and bioavailability (ie. how well it absorbs) of the product you’re using. Different companies will have varying degrees of quality. That said, nutritionists who use this same product recommend using one tablet for every 10 lbs of body weight for normal use. For healing purposes, they recommend 2 tablets for every 10 lbs of body weight.

hii
my baby surfing in thyroid this medicine is useful or not pls send me ans my baby is 1 N 6 month old thx

    Bonnie | ProvenNutritionForKids · July 2, 2014 at 7:45 am

    Hi Poonam,
The Alfalfa complex that we use is not a thyroid medicine. However, as part of a holistic nutritional support program for your baby, it could certainly be beneficial. Other nutrients that are helpful for thyroid issues are extra soy protein, Vita C, B-complex, Vita E among others. Your baby could benefit from a full spectrum multivitamin/multimineral for sure. I hope that helps.

Does it helps to gain weight in kid?

    Bonnie | ProvenNutritionForKids · August 10, 2015 at 10:08 pm

Hi Nisha. No, the alfalfa does not help with weight gain, though it will help decrease growing pains, aid in bone formation, and give wonderful mineral support. Our Meal Shakes for kids would be much better to help with weight gain.

Great info, I really need to try it. I’ve been suffering from sinus problems for some time now, haven’t been able to smell in about 3 months. It’s so annoying, since I used to have an over active sense of smell before. My son and I both have asthma and really look forward to giving this to him.

Rekha · March 17, 2016 at 3:14 pm

My son is 5 and half yr old. He is very underweight with 32 pounds and very poor appetite. Does this help to increase appetite. If so, how much quantity to give to him.

Hello, can I give liquid clorophyll, from Alphalfa, to my 10-month old? If so, how much? He has low platelates right now.

    Bonnie | ProvenNutritionForKids · March 17, 2017 at 9:39 am

    Hi Teresa,
I am hesitant to advise concerning supplements that I am not familiar with. We use a form of Alfalfa that can be crushed and made into a liquid tea or mixed with soft foods. The Alfalfa we use is guaranteed safe and all-natural for use by kids of any age. This is the one I would suggest for you with guaranteed benefits. Also, a safe and effective multivitamin can help as well to boost the nutritional level. Here are the links to what we use and suggest (I can ship these just about anywhere, so let me know if you are outside the U.S.). Alfalfa Complex, ShakleeKids Incredivites

can i give alfaalfa tonic to one year old child

    Bonnie | ProvenNutritionForKids · June 26, 2017 at 11:06 am

I am not familiar with the safety or efficacy of alfalfa in a tonic form. I can only speak to the form of alfalfa that I am familiar with…the concentrated tablet form from Shaklee. This form can be crushed and safely given to children of all ages…the dosage simply adjusted based on weight. See more info here: https://goo.gl/ntGa5g

Hi
My son is 3 years old and he did not eating well even he did not eat 2/2 days he is very under wight 8kg I’m very upset
Plz give me reply

    Bonnie | ProvenNutritionForKids · July 13, 2017 at 8:58 am

So sorry to hear of your son’s struggle. An underweight child can result from many factors but mainly it is due to a lack of calories–a healthy balanced diet with adequate protein. If he is refusing food, then there could be some sickness involved. For that, you would want to see a doctor. Smart supplementation can help correct nutrient deficiencies but not a lack of calories.

Chucha · November 29, 2017 at 2:05 pm

Hi Bonnie,

Do the alfalfa tablets you refer to here increase appetite? I need to help my two year old with her appetite and this is mainly what I am looking for in alfalfa products. As you mention several times, you’re not sure about tonic given to small children. Nor am I. For this reason the tablets seem to be a good option if indeed they do increase appetite.

Your response will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Chucha

    Bonnie | ProvenNutritionForKids · November 29, 2017 at 7:37 pm

Hi Chucha. As you might be aware, there are more ingredients in an Alfalfa tonic than just alfalfa. I am not sure which of those ingredients would be increasing appetite. However, if it indeed is the alfalfa portion that is helping, than our tablets are much more powerful than a tonic. The only way to find out how your 2 year old would do with the tablets, would be to try them. This product comes with a 100% money back guarantee…so even if your child tries them for a month and seems no different, you can get your money back. There is no risk in trying. If you’d like to pursue getting a bottle sent to you, please email me and we can discuss cost/etc. bonnie@provennutritionforkids.com

Hi Bonnie,
My son is 8 years old he is a cancer survivor. Can I give him any Shaklee supplement to him? Is it safe for him? He is currently taking medications everyday. I need your advice please. Thank you.

    Bonnie | ProvenNutritionForKids · February 1, 2018 at 1:42 pm

    Hi Khana,
Yes, Shaklee supplements are some of the best in the world as far as safety, and effectiveness. It would be best though for you to get some guidance on which ones he needs and making sure they don’t interfere with his medications. My Kids’ Symptom Assessment currently comes with a FREE Health Coaching call, for a limited time. So this would be the best way to get some guidance on where to start with very little cost. You can access the Kids’ Symptom Assessment here—> [We have an updated form and process, please reach out for the next best step.]

Asima · March 19, 2018 at 7:43 am

Can it be useful in growth and what is the age limit

Asima · March 19, 2018 at 7:45 am

It is beneficial for growth above the age of 30

    Bonnie | ProvenNutritionForKids · March 22, 2018 at 11:08 am

    Hi Asima,
This tablet form of alfalfa by Shaklee is a mineral powerhouse. It can be beneficial in numerous ways for people of any age. You simply adjust the dosage amount according to body weight, not according to age.

Sushil kumar · March 22, 2018 at 2:02 am

Can i give this tonic to my 3 months old baby? Is it safe for her? If yes what is the quantity?

    Bonnie | ProvenNutritionForKids · March 22, 2018 at 11:03 am

Hi, I am not familiar with a specific alfalfa tonic. The only alfalfa form I am familiar with is the tablet form from Shaklee Corp. These can be crushed and put into liquid form for younger children. I cannot speak to the safety or amount of an “alfalfa tonic.” These are very different in form from the type of Alfalfa that I use with families.

Savera · June 16, 2022 at 2:22 am

Hello, Does Alfalfa increase estrogen levels in young girls? I have heard that alfalfa increases estrogen in general.

    Bonnie · July 28, 2022 at 4:32 pm

No, Savera…not the alfalfa complex that we use. Most plants/vegetables contain phyto-estrogens (this is not to be confused with the female hormone, estrogen). They are two different compounds and many folks have confused the two. Our alfalfa complex is ultra-pure and completely safe for anyone. My two young girls took alfalfa even from a young age, and they are super healthy. 🙂 Let me know if you would like more information about what we use. Thank you for your question!

Kimberly King · February 17, 2023 at 3:09 pm

I was curious if the alfalfa tablets are safe if you have hypoglycemia? I was reading information that is lowers blood sugar.
I currently have some malabsorption going on with Candida , SIBO and suspected mast cell activation syndrome.
Thank you

    Bonnie · April 14, 2023 at 6:31 pm

The alfalfa complex tablets we use are completely safe for everyone. I have not heard of them lowering blood sugar. It sounds like you could benefit from many of the natural nutrition pieces that we have used! What is the next step for you in your health journey?
