Campfire Banana Boats

Published by Bonnie on

My husband grew up having regular bonfires and campfires with his family, and this recipe idea came from him. Our first time at a campground together, he whipped these yummy treats together, and I was so impressed!

These are a great alternative to smores, enabling you to substitute the sugary marshmallows with some excellent nutrition.

Equipment

  • Campfire 🙂

Ingredients

  • 4 Bananas
  • 1 Cup graham cracker crumbs
  • 6 oz Semi-Sweet or Dark Chocolate chips
  • Tinfoil
  • Plastic spoons

Instructions

  • Prepare campfire so that coals are hot. (You will be placing the finished banana boats down in the coals.)
  • Peel down one side of each banana, leaving peel intact. Don't tear off the strip of peel; let it hang there while you do the rest.
  • Make a "boat" from each banana by making two long cuts that allow you to remove a slice of the banana from the inside. (See photo below--my banana is brown here, but yours should be yellow.)
  • Set aside this piece of banana and save. Fill the cavity of the banana by placing several pieces of chocolate (or chocolate chips) inside, and then cover those with graham cracker crumbs.
  • Replace the slice of banana on top. Then return the peel to cover it up as best you can.
  • Wrap each banana in a piece of tinfoil and place directly in the campfire coals for about 3-5 minutes.
  • Remove from fire once bananas are warmed through.
  • Eat the inside of the banana boat with a spoon and savor every warm and chocolatey bite!
